About the couple
Bride: Shannon Krystal Novak
Groom: Henry Verne Plantinga
How they met: Shannon begins the story. “We met through a mutual friend,
Carolyn. During the autumn of 2008 Carolyn was having a night out with friends
when she ran into Henry having a good time with some of his friends at a Grande
Prairie nightclub. Carolyn and Henry had met through mutual friends during their
college days years back and naturally began a conversation. Henry mentioned to
Carolyn that he had recently been awarded a promotion and had relocated to Peace
River. Carolyn had matchmaking on her mind! She told Henry that she had a “wife”
for him in Peace River, her good friend Shannon had recently moved back to her
hometown and she was convinced they would be a perfect match. I guess she was
right!”
Engagement story: “We got engaged on March 5, 2010,” says Shannon. “No
smoke and mirrors here, although the time and place were truly a surprise
because it was such a regular day. I didn’t suspect a thing that Friday
afternoon when I came home from work. However, Henry was acting a little unusual
–- very on edge and nervous. Suddenly, he came running up to me and got down on
one knee. At first I thought that maybe he was just bending down to pick
something up…and then…he pulled out a ring and said “I love you, will you marry
me?” It was amazing surprise –- the wedding planning started right then and
there!”
Wedding date: April 30th, 2011
Wedding theme: A spring fairytale
Guests: 110
Best moment: “The first dance,” says Shannon. “Henry and I did our first
dance as part of our grand entrance into the reception venue. Our bridal party
had a blast dancing in to “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen. Henry and I
were the last to enter and as we got half way down the aisle the music changed
to “That’s All” by Michael Buble. It was a romantic moment that was all our own.
It was a time when we could, for a moment, pretend that we were alone in our own
paradise. We just looked into each others’ eyes, smiled and enjoyed being
completely in love. It was magical.”
Wedding song: Michael Buble “That’s All”
Favourite wedding detail: “The wedding cake -– a three-tiered square cake
covered in ivory fondant, gold scrolling and coral ribbon to match our wedding
colour. Our cake featured a custom-designed cake topper highlighting the groom’s
favourite toy: a red Honda quad (the groom’s exact make and model!) So much of a
wedding is about a girl making her fairytale dreams come true, so I wanted Henry
to have a little of himself represented at our wedding as well. I think our cake
did a great job of encompassing exactly what we wanted our wedding to be —
elegant with a little silly thrown in for fun!” explains Shannon.
Honeymoon: “We spent amazing two and a half weeks enjoying the breathtaking
country of Italy. We landed in Rome and travelled to destinations such as
Sorrento, Alberobello, Venice, Florence and the country hills of Tuscany. It was
the ideal place to relax and wind down after a year of intensive wedding
planning,” says Shannon.
